Seminole Heights Community Garden

By Shawn - Posted on 04 February 2009

Tonight at the Metro Center in Seminole Heights, a large group of interested neighbors, experienced organic gardeners, academics, and a city council member met to discuss starting a community garden in Seminole Heights. Neighbors and experts discussed various ways to organize such an effort, whether or not it should be limited to organic growing, and what sort of mix between personal plots and communal gardening might be best.

Behind it all is Robin Milcowitz. She was able to fill the meeting room at the Metro Center with little effort. People appear ready to embrace a new type of urban development. In addition to the hopeful gardeners, the room held representatives from Sulphur Springs community garden, the Eden Project ministry, Urban Charrette, organic farms like Sweetwater, local chefs, and the Tampa Downtown Market.

Councilmember Mary Mulhern spoke before the group passionately about practical methods for obtaining funding, land, and community support. A representative of our own radio station WMNF was there to record the whole event.

While this site hopes to focus on fun things you can do today in Seminole Heights, a community garden would be an excellent addition should one open in the future. As I am an avid gardener, I will try and keep the garden's progress posted here.
