Angelica Diaz opens Organic Juice Lounge

While Angelica, owner of now closed Viva la Fridas, did not open a coffee shop in Seminole Heights, she has opened something similar--an Organic Juice bar.

The juice bar is located in one of the small bungalows that line Florida avenue at 5805 N Florida Ave. It is next door to the Jai Dee Yoga and Wellness studio. Already you can see Angelica's tastes expressed in the vibrant colors, found objects in the landscaping, and pictures of Frida Kahlo.

Restaurants in Seminole Heights

Back on April 4th, 2007, Jay McGee posted an article to the (now defunct) Seminole Heights blog titled "S.H. Restaurant Year in Review - Conclusion". The story broke down the restaurant rumors in Seminole Heights by the categories of complete, coming soon, and rumor. Roughly two and a half years later, I thought it might be interesting to re-examine that entry and see how things turned out.

Halloween Decorations: Green, Cheap, and Easy

It's that time of year again where the major department stores pack the shelves with oodles of plastic Halloween decorations. I admit that I get a little spooky myself when shopping for Fall and Winter holiday decorations.  I just like the stuff; what can I say?

Not all local resources cost money

Living local isn't just about shopping at the nearby mom and pop stores. It can also mean finding entertainment in your local area. Some of cheapest entertainment comes in the form of our city parks. Seminole Heights has a number of them, including Rivercrest park with its long river frontage, boardwalk, and docks.

Buy Local - Chico Bags

How many times to you return from a shopping trip to find yourself with a handful of empty bags? What do you do with them? If you’re like me, you either throw them away or store them in a corner until you remember to recycle them. Fortunately, I put an end to this dilemma.

About 3 months ago, I bought a Chico Bag from one of my favorite shops, Tampa Street Market. It’s made of recycle plastic bottles, and when not in use, packs up into a cute little sack. It has a carabiner to hook it onto a belt loop or purse handle.

Green in the Heights: water barrels

When we do start getting rain again, you could be ready with your very own water barrel. These plastic beauties hold 55 gallons (more or less) of perfectly free water. (UPDATE: Date/time changed to May 30th @ 9am)

Back In the Day Baazar

Seminole Heights is home to many shops selling antiques, recycled treasures, and just plain "neat stuff".  You see these shops dotted along our commercial corridors, often in clusters, representing the very soul of our neighborhood. Donnie & Marie may have been a little country and a little rock-n-roll, but Seminole Heights is a little funky and a little granola. While the rest of the country is catching on to recycling as a lifestyle, we've been living in recycled homes for decades.
